Owners of a physical or digital PS4 copy can download the PS5 edition from its PlayStation Store product page.

A physical owner must use a PS5 with a disc drive and insert the PS4 disc for ownership verification. A disc cannot be verified by the digital-only PS5 model.

Xbox

Owners of the digital Xbox One version can download the Xbox Series X|S edition through the Microsoft Store or their owned-game library.

Rockstar notes that an Xbox One physical disc cannot be converted into a digital current-generation license because of the platform's limitations. That exception was missing from the broad production summary and is essential before someone expects a free download.

What transfers to the newer version?

Rockstar described easier migration for both Story Mode saves and GTA Online progress. Migration is handled through the Rockstar account and the destination console flow.
